Al-Waswaas (whisperings from the shaytan)

It is the whisperings of the shaytan that every believer has to deal with and which can sometimes cause major problems both in daily life and in worship such as washing and prayer to even religious convictions.
We will use the traditions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the statements of the scholars to help our brothers and sisters with the will of ALLAH to withstand this attack of the cursed shaytan.

Allah the Exalted says in His Book:
Interpretation:

1. Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of men,
2. The King of people
3. The God of people.
4. That He might deliver me from the evil of the devil's blows.
5. Who whispers in people's hearts
6. From the midst of the jinn and men. ”

The wax haze harasses the Muslim in his worship

Uthman ibn Abil 'Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said; O Messenger of ALLAH, the shaytan comes between me and my prayer and he confuses me in my recitation. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
That is a shaytan named Khanzab. If you feel his presence, seek refuge in ALLAH against him and spit (without saliva) 3 x to the left.
Uthman said, I did this and ALLAH kept him away from me.
(Narrated by Muslim)

Abu Hureirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of ALLAH said: When the adhaan is given for prayer, the shaytan runs away, and he winds hard so that he does not hear the adhaan. When the adhaan is over he comes back, and when the Iqamah is given he runs away again, then when the Iqamah is ready he comes back to distract a man from his prayer by saying, you remember this and that , things the man had forgotten until he no longer knew how much rak'ah he had prayed. If any of you no longer know how much raka'ah he had prayed, whether it is 3 or 4 then let him do 2 kneeling while he is sitting (the kneeling of forgetfulness)
(narrated by Bukhari)

Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
If any of you are unsure about his prayer and can't remember how much rak'ah he had prayed, whether it was 3 or 4 then let him avoid the doubt and act so that what he knows for sure, let him kneel 2 afterwards ( forgetfulness) before he says the salaam. Then if he had prayed 5 rak'ah then this will make up for his prayer and if he had prayed 4 it will annoy the shaytan.
(Narrated by Muslim)

So we see that it is not allowed to give in to the wash down, one has to act on conviction and not on doubt, what we unfortunately often see is that when people are not sure whether they still have the washing for the washing certainty to do the washing again, and this is not correct, if one is not sure whether he has broken the washing or not, but it is certain that one had the washing before that, then one acts on what is certain and that is that one has had a wash and will just pray without doing the wash again.

Muhammad ibn Muflih (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn 'Aaqeel said and was asked:
A man dives into the water a number of times and doubts whether his Ghusl (large wash) is valid or not. What is your opinion about this? Go away because prayer is not mandatory for you to pray. He said why? He (ibn 'Aaqeel) said: Because the Prophet said peace to him:
"The pen has been lifted for 3, and 1, the insane of which until he reaches his wits".
Because the person who dives into the water a number of times and doubts whether the water has hit him is insane.
(Saheeh Al-Jaami 'nr 3512, Masaeeb Al-Insaan page 135)

Washing haze in the 'Aqeedah

Abu Hureirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The shaytan comes to some of you and says, who created this and this? Who created this and this? Until he says, who created your Lord? When this happens, take refuge in ALLAH and stop thinking about that.
(Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)

Abu Hureirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
Some of the Prophet's companions (peace be upon him) came to him and said, we find things in our hearts that none of us would dare to speak out loud. He said, do you really think so (hatred of these thoughts)? They say yes, he said, then this is pure Imaan.
(Narrated by Muslim)

So we see that when the shaytan gives the Muslim whisperings that go so much that they want to destroy the aqeedah of the Muslim and the Muslim then blocks it, this is proof of his pure iman.

Shaych Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) says about this:

In other words, the fact that these whispers took place and hated them so much and the blocking of their hearts is a sign of clear iman, just like the Mujahid to whom the enemy comes and he resists them until he defeats them, and this is from under the greatest jihad. Sareeh (clear) means pure imane, just like pure milk. It becomes clear and pure because they hated these devils and resisted them, and this made their faith clear and pure.
(Majmoo'Fatawa 7 / 282)
And he says in Majmoo'Fatawa 14 / 108;
This washing haze is something that enters the heart without a person choosing to do so, and if a person hates it and fights it, this hatred is a sign of pure iman.
He further says:
Many of the scholars said, hating and disgusting it and being against it is a sign of pure iman. ALLAH is praised that the only thing the shaytan can do is to give wax haze, because when the shaytan is defeated from beneath the jinn, he gives wax haze and when the human shaytan is defeated he loves. Waswaas touches anyone who sets himself to worship ALLAH and to do dhikr etc. So one must be steadfast and patient and continue with dhikr and prayer, and he should not feel discouraged because if he perseveres then this will turn the shaytan's trick away from him, for the shaytan's trick is weak.
(Majmoo'Fatawa 22 / 608)

What to do about the Waswaas?

- Seeking refuge with ALLAH and calling on HIS HELP:

Shaych Al-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him, he was asked about the medicine for Al-Waswaas.
He replied: There is no medicine except asking ALLAH for well-being and taking refuge with HIM against the cursed shaytan and fighting to block the wax haze, and if it distracts him then he has to fight that it is not in his mind remains, because if the wax haze remains in his thoughts then it will become stronger and dominate, but if he succeeds in defending himself against what is in the heart then it will gradually disappear and ALLAH knows best.
(Al-Fatawa Al-Sa'diyyah 126)

Ibn Al-Jawzi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
It has been reported from some of the selef who said to their students that they had said:
What are you going to do against the shaytan when he crosses your path every time? He said I will fight him.
He (the teacher) said: And when he returns?
He said, I will fight him.
He (the teacher) said, this can take a long time. Did you see when you walk past a herd of sheep and their shepherd dog barks at you or stops you from passing by, what are you going to do?
He said, I will do my best to push him back.
He (the teacher) said, this can take a long time, but you should seek the help of the owner of the sheep, he will be enough for you against the dog.
(Talbees Iblees page 48)

- Blocking the wash haze and not commenting on it:

Muhammad ibn Muflih (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Ahmed ibn Abi Al-Hawari said:
I prayed to Abi Sulaymaan Al-Darani against Al-Waswaas in prayer and he said:
If you wish this to stop then you should be very happy when you feel it again (wash-down), because if you are happy then this will stop with you, because there is nothing more hated by the shaytan than the joy of a believer, but when you are stuck with it then it will multiply, some of the scholars have said:
This is because Al-Waswaas is a test for those with a full iman, because a thief will not enter an empty and abandoned house (to steal something).
(Masaeeb Al-Insaan page 126)

Shaych Al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah said (May Allah have mercy on him):

One can get rid of this washing haze by taking refuge in ALLAH and ignoring it, so that if the shaytan says, you have not washed your face (with the wudu) then you have to say, yes I have washed my face, and if he thinks that he did not make the intention for prayer or did not say ALLAHU Akbar, then he should say in his heart, yes I made him the intention and ALLAHU Akbar said. He must hold fast to the truth and avert the washcloth that is against the truth, so that the shaytan will see how strong he is in sticking to the truth and then he will leave him alone. But if the shaytan sees that he may be influenced by the doubts caused by the washcloth, he will send him more washcloth until he can no longer resist it and his heart is open and seductive for the washcloth of the shaytan from below. jinn and man, and he will move from one subject to another until he works him to his destruction.
Dar Al-Ta'aarud 3 / 318)

- The frequent remembrance of ALLAH (dhikr)

When one gets wax haze one should suppress it and block it and not respond to it, in addition one should remember ALLAH and preferably aloud, this will prevent the wash haze and the heart will be cleansed from the influence of the shaytaan.
